Maasai Diet

The Maasai Diet

Meat, blood, milk, fat, honey, and tree bark are among the six fundamental meals consumed by Maasai people. Fresh and curdled milk are both consumed. Fresh milk is drank from a calabash, and it is occasionally blended with fresh cattle blood. By nicking the jugular vein, blood can be collected. The most common uses for mixed blood and milk are as a ritual drink and as a source of nutrition for the sick. On important occasions and for rituals, bulls, oxen, and lambs are slaughtered for meat. Skin and hides from the animals are used as bedding, while cow manure is used to construct structures (it is smeared on the walls). The Maasai way of life focuses entirely around their cattle. The Maasai have recently supplemented their diet with a variety of foods.
