Maasai Hair

 FACTS ABOUT THE MAASAI HAIR

Women and men in the Maasai tribe shave their heads to commemorate rites of passage such as circumcision and marriage. This depicts the new beginning that will be made as one moves from one chapter of life to the next. Only Maasai warriors are permitted to have long hair, which they weave into thin braided strands.

When the maasai children reach the age of three, they are given the moniker "moons," and their heads are shaved clean save for a tuft of hair that resembles a cockade that runs from the nape of the neck to the forehead. Two days before they are circumcised, the young lads have their heads shaved. The young warriors then let their hair grow and spend a lot of time grooming it.
